ok... so a couple of salient points I'd like to bring out here.

With the release of the new iMacs from Apple, we now have a solution
for you.

The DisplayPort connector on these iMacs is capable (through an
adaption of the display port plug to HDMI) of carrying up to 24bit,
96kHz, 8 channels of linear pcm audio.

Griffin technologies provide an adaptor to adapt the display port
connection to HDMI, and once you plug this in, and then hook up a
receiver on the other end of the HDMI cable.

I have just seen that there is another company that makes Mini Display
Port to HDMI connectors, but in this case, they include connections to
allow the sound to be output too. There are two versions, one that uses
the TosLink connector
(ttp://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=6331&seq=1&format=2
) and one that used a USB connection
(http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2
).

I was hoping someone would make something like this...

I don't know of anyone who has tried this yet, but we will!

I also don't see any reason why your Mac (through the USB interface) couldn't be seeing multi-channel audio as USB had the bandwidth to carry it. So, if they've done this right, this is indeed an interesting product. Thanks for the link

Bill

This at least means that Macs other than new iMacs may be able to get the
sound through the HDMI connector. But the big question is what would
happen if you try to output multichannel sounds. I imagine (given the
discussion we have been having) that the Optical connector will be limited
to SPDIF characteristics, i.e. stereo or AC3 encoded surround sound.

However, I guess that there is no need why these restrictions would apply
for the USB version. Does anyone know? It would be fantastic if this
connector (which sells for $36.75) allowed proper unencoded multichannel
sound to be streamed to a home theatre amplifier.

I might just order one to find out, but if anyone knows the answer, please
let us know...

Cheers

Simon
