I have just seen that there is another company that makes Mini Display
Port to HDMI connectors, but in this case, they include connections to
allow the sound to be output too. There are two versions, one that uses
the TosLink connector
(ttp://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=6331&seq=1&format=2
) and one that used a USB connection
(http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2
).
This at least means that Macs other than new iMacs may be able to get the
sound through the HDMI connector. But the big question is what would
happen if you try to output multichannel sounds. I imagine (given the
discussion we have been having) that the Optical connector will be limited
to SPDIF characteristics, i.e. stereo or AC3 encoded surround sound.
However, I guess that there is no need why these restrictions would apply
for the USB version. Does anyone know? It would be fantastic if this
connector (which sells for $36.75) allowed proper unencoded multichannel
sound to be streamed to a home theatre amplifier.
I might just order one to find out, but if anyone knows the answer, please
let us know...
Cheers
Simon
