I think there is a misconception of what I was referring to. It probably goes without saying that with the iPad (or iTouch/iPhone) at the moment there are many solutions already in use for putting some sort of display that can remotely control something on another computer for control. Much like the Lemur (which is the one use for the iPad I am already counting on using as someone will DEFINITELY create something for this).
That however was not the intent of the question. I was asking in terms of existing specification or possible add on with regards to the AU specification. As has been stated here and elsewhere MANY times is that the processing portion of an AU is separate from the UI portion. Even so far as has been told to me (paraphrased) "The code is designed to be separate because who knows, the host may not even have any graphics possibilities!"
With that said, my curiosity is with respect to the GUI portion of an AU plugin, and the fact the iPad is a different architecture. If a plugin sticks with certain capabilities within the Cocoa framework, is it possible in the future to export that display over to the iPad. That's it.
If I want to open up say Waldorf Largo and have the UI display on the touch, does the structure of the AU allow for that eventually, and if so, what about the difference in architecture.
Having used professional digital mixing consoles like some of the stuff from Euphonix or Digidesign, I've always marveled at the possibility of touch screen technology that is more generic.
And truth be told, it might be better to use some GUI export technology like VNC (X11 is too slow for that sort of stuff in my experience) to use the iPad alongside a keyboard and mouse.
Or imagine if you will using the iPad as a mouse (touchpad) with a toggle that allows you to go from controlling the main computer to controlling something locally.
THESE are the areas I find most fascinating with the iPad, as a controller to the main computer.
For instance:
Remote audio meters
Mixer or at least master fader
EQ editing
I am sure the list could go on for days! :)
If anyone saw the iPhone app that controls ProTools that someone showed a year or so ago, now with a bigger display, you could be in the vocal both controlling your audio app remotely with visual information and not need to use something like the Transport.
