MIDIPacketList numPackets Question

In my callback function (MIDIReadProc used in a call to MIDIInputPortCreate) I print out how many packets long the list is (the numPackets field). It is never greater than 1 packet long. Is this a problem with my controller? I have no idea how to handle chords otherwise... Any help is greatly appreciated.
