Well, Griffin confirmed it and in the absence of any
information from anywhere else I answered my own question by inspecting the
incoming audio data, and it is clear that the iMic is recording at 16 bits, not
24. Tested on Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Why is this please and can we ever expect a resolution?
Here we have the most popular budget USB audio device for the Mac with an
unpleasant hidden flaw. Yuk.

It reports some 24 bit AudioBasicStreamDescriptions so
that at least is encouraging. I have pinged their technical support
department. If anyone else knows anything about this I'd appreciate
hearing from them. Thanks.

It does not limit it to 16b
24b works great on OS X...assuming the
device is properly USB Audio class compliant and it's descriptors/streaming
properly stream 24b
I do not know if the iMic does/doesn't work properly
24b, but many USB audio devices out there do.

Can someone comment on this article

Specifically, is the claim that OS X limits
the resolution of USB audio devices to 16 bits correct? I need to be able
to answer a question from a customer about this.
Many thanks - Paul Sanders.
