route changes/plug-unplug headphones

dear experts,

I recently ran into problems using headphones with the iPad on which a self-written synthesis-app is running.
I figured out that most of the times I plug or unplug the headphones, my audio session buffer size and/or samplerate are being changed which really messes up my sound. I worked around it by listening to route changes and if changes occur using setPreferredHardwareSampleRate and kAudioSessionProperty_PreferredHardwareIOBufferDuration to reset the initial values.
But this mutes the sound for some time, especially when unplugging.
Is there a better way to do this? Without having such gaps in the sound?

thanks,
Michael
