Hello to all, thanks for the replies.
The files are wav. I also think that the "bad aiff" exists because this message is old (google -208 error, not too many hits)
and should be interpreted as "bad pcm file". Files open normally with everything else i tried apart from QT 7.6.6 (this includes
but is not limited to QT X, VLC 1.1, Audacity 1.3). Here is the afinfo:
unknown-00-1e-52-76-77-fd:~ vas$ afinfo /Users/vas/Desktop/roman/roman\ audio/Audio\ 05_04.wav
File: /Users/vas/Desktop/roman/roman audio/Audio 05_04.wav
File type ID: WAVE
Data format: 1 ch, 48000 Hz, 'lpcm' (0x0000000C) 24-bit little-endian signed integer
no channel layout.
estimated duration: 8.382896 sec
audio bytes: 1207137
audio packets: 402379
bit rate: 1152000 bits per second
packet size upper bound: 3
audio data file offset: 864
not optimized
source bit depth: I24
Useful information is that those files have been fingerprinted by Cubase 6. I can reproduce the same issue with files fingerprinted by Logic 9. Given that QT X has a rebuilt underlying engine, I think it makes sense that the modification
in the header simply confuses the older QT 7 and I don't see this fixable. Of course, I 'd love to be proven wrong, hence my posting
to this mailing list. I found a very handy utility online, bwavreader, that gave me even more information, those who want can check it out here, it is a simple png screenshot:
Thanks to all for the replies again.

or in Terminal, try: afinfo <drag your file to the terminal>. Though afinfo doesn't dump chunks, it's always my first port of call when I get an audio file error, since it gives a very thorough description…

If you install libsndfile, you can use the utility program "sndfile-info" to report details of the format, including the contents of known chunks; and of course what format it actually is.

Don't be misled by the mention of AIFF. -208 means badFileFormat, i.e. something not understood by the system. It originally started out as "bad AIFF" but is more generic than that.

So why does it think it's supposed to be in AIFF format? Do these files have an .aif suffix? If so they're expected to be in big endian format and QT won't be able to read them...

Hello,
I have been trying to open some wav files, mono, 24-bit little endian, with QT player
7.6.6 and I get a OSStatus error -208 " (was not type AIFF or was of bad format, corrupt)" .
error. Those files open ok in QT X. OSX is 10.6.8. Any ideas why this happens and how to fix?
Best,
Vassilis
