As a matter of fact I've watched it closely and it doesn't help much
in the case of signing AUs because it deals with signing
*applications*.

Applications usually contain only one chunk of executable code.
AudioUnits are bundles that contain more than one chunk of executable
code, therefore they cannot be signed using Xcode's "Archive"
functionality but have to be signed manually (just like a multi
package installer).
