Yes.

I want to know how System Preferences (or whatever else is responsible for that particular piece of data) populates the "Type" field for the input and output streams, so I can return something sensible there.

I am. I currently have it set to kAudioStreamTerminalTypeDigitalAudioInterface, but I've also tried other values, but they do not seem to have any effect on the Type-field that is shown in System Preferences; it always remains empty.
