Your understanding is correct. See Paul's second email - he was a bit hasty :) You absolutely *can* use this from a render callback.

If it takes no locks and is "very efficient" why can't you use it in a render callback? From my understanding it does no disk IO, just puts the data in a ringbuffer for processing from another thread somewhere in its innards..
