Re: physical formats: Possibly, but those seem to apply to streams. What I'm doing is changing the hardware nominal output rate (in an iTunes plugin). It seems to do what I want..
And yes, the device that gives a single range indeed accepts any value within that range. In fact, I hadn't noticed that AMS allows to type a value in the rate selector, contrary to the other (builtin) devices with their discrete lists.
I'm not entirely clear on why I'm not hearing anything when I play a 5000Hz sine with the device set to 10000Hz, but I presume I'm just overlooking a perfectly clear explanation (I get gorgeous beats when I pick 10002Hz :) )
