The user expectation is that the device has one volume setting. If
you're sure you're not going to violate this expectation, and the mixer
is always in the chain, then why don't you always apply your volume
control to the mixer instead? It doesn't make sense to me for your
control to sometimes effect the device volume and other times not to.
