Currently the produced file is for Mac/iOS however in the future the files may be used outside of the Mac environment.

That is a wonderful. I may need to use this as an option and so I will investigate this option.
Thank you,

Last time I checked it couldn't (at least using AudioFileSetUserData); but that was quite some time ago - like maybe Tiger.

I would like to apply information that is readable by iTunes that allows a list of information. In my case, what I am looking to do would be equivalent to applying the song lyrics or something that is more than just a few characters of information to the m4a, so the information is transported with the file itself.

[Caveat: I don't know about the iTunes part, just the metadata part...]
If this is Mac/iOS only, why not use the CAF file type? It supports Apple Lossless compression and allows you to write metadata using AudioFileSetUserData(). Of course, there are also some uncompressed (and, hence, lossless) formats like AIFF and WAVE that allow you to write metadata.
Hope this gets you a little further.
