Can you just adjust the wet/dry levels on the effects you are using?

You can do this if you do not want to change the effects you are using during playback. Disconnecting and reconnecting is required if you are using effects that you want to change during playback that are audio units themselves. If you are using your own custom effects then you will have your own strategy for manipulating the samples.
