Out of curiosity, are there any pull model 3D audio APIs? I am very new to audio programming and my knowledge of frameworks and APIs outside of Core Audio is still very limited. I am thrilled to learn more about the audio programming world.

We may want to file bugs at bugreport.apple.com against docs that link to openal.org -- such as TechNote TN 2199 <https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/technotes/tn2199/_index.html> -- since those links are dead and it's not clear they're coming back.

I'm sure we can all find copies of the OpenAL Programming Guide PDF around the web, but this is potentially problematic for OS X and iOS audio development going forward. It might be necessary for Apple to pull the OpenAL guide into the Xcode doc bundle, if it's able to do so legally.

[No, I will not write you a book on OpenAL.]

Just for reference sake, I will note that OpenAL is a push model audio API and in that sense differs fundamentally from the pull model used by CoreAudio, ASIO, waveRT, JACK, PortAudio and others for over a decade now. It is far from clear that it was ever an appropriate model for audio I/O even though it does have nice reasonably simple abstractions for 3rd audio (the implementation of which is fraught with policy and technical issues, however).
