I would hate to speculate on what Logic and EXS24 specifically are doing, but it's worth remembering that the StartNote()/StopNote() API allows the host to specify an arbitrary collection of per-note parameters at note on time.

Unfortunately, they're essentially constants that you can't modulate over time. However, there's a bunch of things you can do with this like "pluck position" etc., and I guess "articulation ID" would be one of those.
