There is one obvious technical reason: Power / Energy Savings. When you present both inputs and outputs in a single device you must also start/stop them in tandem. With duplex devices you cannot just run the output side, even if that is only what you need/want.
I’m not saying that’s the reason Apple did this, since I don’t actually know, but it could be.
