Device synchronisation

Greetings everyone,

I want to play a test tone and at the same time record it back. This works fine when using the same device for output and input (play through basically), however I want to be able to play the tone out of a device and record it from another device. I have tried setting up the two devices and starting them (one playing, one recording) at the "same" time, but the recording is always a bit later than the playback (the start of the test tone is missing).

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong? Is there a way to synchronise the two devices, (assume same sample rates, frame size, etc) so that if I play a test tone (say 0.5 second long), and at the same time record 1 second of audio in, that the test tone will be present somewhere in the 1 second recording?

Thanks,
Aristotel
