We're having two different conversations somehow, though I do appreciate you taking the time.

Thanks Paul,

The app I'm working on is an audio editor. It supports 32 or 64 bit files natively.

What format supports 64 bit sample depth? What program creates them?

If I install an app that let me open 64bit files natively, and I run them through a 64bit-capable effect... it doesn't matter that the difference is completely imperceptible. I don't want to throw away the user's data without a good reason.

just so we're clear, a 32 bit sample depth captures the signal of brownian motion in every part of the signal chain. A 64 bit floating point number has 52 bits of mantissa. You're not throwing away data, you're throwing away noise.
