CM6206-based USB devices have a similar problem in that they support up to 96kHz for stereo but only up to 48kHz for 4, 6 and 8-channel, and they trip a similar issue. This may add to the idea that the Mac USB device driver has its limitations in this situation, as the same device under Linux shows the 96kHz sample rate for stereo whereas Mac OS only shows 44.1kHz and 48kHz at all times.
I have seen other non-USB devices which also have different sets of sample rates for different output channel settings and they are handled ok, though Audio MIDI Setup always shows the full set of sample rates no matter what the output channel selection - only some can be selected at times.
