Panther install disk that needs to be reinstalled, but I am very hesitant

Not really. Many of the files from BSD.pkg have been updated in the meantime, up to the latest security update. You don't want to downgrade /usr/sbin/sshd or /usr/sbin/krb5kdc, for example. Just extract the man pages from BSD.pkg/Contents/Archive.pax.gz, using /bin/pax or some other tool.
