There are a number of people who seem to actually compile
operational systems from the source. I'm not one of them (too
dumb) but I have used the source code on several occasions to
fathom why things compile here and not there or why what used
to work suddenly decides not to.

Some probably do suffer for us all with OCD. Still, having the
real story where you can work with it is at least very useful.
For some purposes, it's essential.
