Now that the source has been out for a full day, and all those
that have been chomping on the bit to get it finally have it,
I haven't seen anyone post success or failure stories with what
they're doing, other than my own dismal failure due to the lack
of xnu headers/source. Do people actually do anything with the
source, or just have an obsessive compulsive disorder to
continually check for it?
I will say that it has come in handy to see LibSystem source at least in the past when I was trying to understand how to best optimize some memory routines for an HPC library I was working on for Mac OS X. I learned a lot about the allocators for malloc and such from the source, and somewhat faster than if I had to dig around for documents that may have addressed the issue I wanted to know about.
Don't get me wrong, the docs are pretty darned good too, I just would have asked the wrong questions about how I wanted to use malloc and other functions because they were aimed at developers coming at it from a different direction.
Sometimes the source is the best document you can ever have.
Hmm. I wonder if we can get xnu released under ADA if I get a
note from my doctor.
