I thought StartupItems were deprecated, and we weren't supposed to use them.

I just worry that the attitude displayed towards existing practice will show
up in future revisions.  "We stopped supporting malloc, because the entire
memory management model it implies is ludicrous and outmoded.  You may need to
make some small code changes to adapt."

The vision of the future is an interesting one, and I'm not even entirely
convinced that it's wrong; the transition management is enough to keep me
from moving any services to a Mac until I've seen a couple of transitions
that go more smoothly.
