I'd like to start a technical discussion on the Darwin kernel for Intel processors, but I guess
that will have to wait...

According to ...
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/overview.html

we read ...

"Darwin is the open source UNIX-based foundation of Mac OS X"
...
"Apple has made open source and standards a key part of its strategy..."

But Darwin isn't open source anymore. You can't compile your own version of Darwin for Intel anymore.
Maybe the web page needs updating to reflect the reality of the situation?
Maybe put an asterisk next to open source?

Honestly, this entire charade is really disappointing.

Ernesto.

First,  thanks for no longer cross-posting to multiple Apple mailing lists, it is appreciated (I notice that you are still cross-posting to your own, but that is obviously your business).

Second, I am compelled to note the fact that the darwin-dev mailing list is intended for "technical discussion for general Darwin software development", that being the wording of the description on http://lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo.   I'm well aware of the fact that some consider the "wider issues" of software freedom and the open source release process to be technical discussion, but I believe those issues have already been more than adequately covered in this thread and we're now well off track into gnu-darwin evangelism and advocacy.  This is not an advocacy list, nor is it intended for covering the politics of free vs proprietary software.  I'm not saying those thing don't have their place on other lists, simply not this one.

This thread should therefore be closed (on darwin-dev) and discussion returned to topics more in line with the charter of this list.  Given that the GNU-Darwin project has its own open mailing lists CC'd on this discussion, it's also reasonable to expect that anyone from darwin-dev who wishes to continue to participate in it can simply subscribe to the appropriate gnu-darwin lists and do so there.   Please (everyone), remove darwin-dev from the CC line in any further postings on this thread.

Thank you,

- Jordan
