No, but they prove that it's not a bug to allow the laptop to keep running with the lid closed.
In this case, "not triggering sleep" is equivalent. As long as "sleep: never" works in the control panel then the desired effect is achieved.
BTW, I'm not necessarily an advocate for disabling what I consider to be a useful security feature (forcing sleep upon closing the lid).
If that was the case, the screen could lock upon closure. However, the screen doesn't always lock when slept either. If however, you are saying that sleeping is a security feature in that the machine is no longer available to networks; obviously if the user wants the machine running they wouldn't care about that.
From this it seems reasonable to assume that "waking up with the lid closed and an external display attached" is a different case from "don't go to sleep when the lid is closed."

It is a different case, but the laptop is still running with the lid closed!
