This list is not an official support channel. File a defect and you may get an authoritative answer.
What functionality will I be losing? Is it just searching the backups?
Discussions of Spotlight or Time Machine are off-topic for this list. I only answered the previous question because blocking volume ejection can indeed be construed as a darwin-level issue.
After a bit of searching it seems that many people have been having problems with the time machine indexing.
See comments: http://tips4mac.blogspot.com/2008/02/adjusting-spotlight-for-your-time.html Further google searching brought up others with similar issues (duplicates & trouble ejecting). Thanks
