programmatically adding MIME types from an installer

Hello, all ...

I need to make my application installer (OSX pmproj-based) automatically add a special MIME type to OSX / Safari -- basically, when a file of a certain type is downloaded, I need the application that my installer installs to start, and it seems that MIME types are the easiest / most cross-platform (I also need to solve this same problem with Firefox on OSX, as well as Firefox and IE on Windows) / most open way to do this. I've not been able to find out how to do this by searching the Apple developer docs. Can someone point me in the right direction? I'd appreciate it :-)

Regards,

John
