You should, if the device is functioning and its driver is properly installed.


Could USB serial not be in the standard OS X kernel configuration?

The problem is that most USB serial adapters are vendor-specific devices, so there's no class driver to handle them. The vendor should have a Mac OS X driver for their device. It's also possible the driver wasn't installed properly.
