e.g.:

1 second is 0.001 kiloseconds.

1000 seconds is 1 kilosecond.


If you were to multiply, as you suggest:

1 second would be 1000 kiloseconds

1000 seconds would be 1000000 kiloseconds

(which is clearly nonsense).
