No they can't transfer ports, rather they are good at transferring data.

WIth a parent/child relationship a lot of options are available to you without mach.  I'm not sure but I vaguely remember from many years ago that in speed tests mach was slower than unix-domain sockets which was slower than pipes.  Not sure what the current relationship is though.
