I think Snow Leopard just needs more RAM to run comfortably. (I have good experience on a MacBook Pro with 8 GB, and hope this one will be OK when maxed out to the 4 GB it can take.)
I run my unibody alu MacBook with 4GB on up-to-date Snow Leopard. Runs like a charm. In fact, it’s only the “big” stuff (Photoshop, builds, etc.) which come close to consuming it. My wife’s recentish plastic MacBook has whatever Apple sticks in them nowadays (1GB? 2GB? can’t remember), runs decently enough for mail/web/Tweetie/etc. Would probably struggle with more intensive stuff, though.
