James, you can not build a full retail kernel from the darwin xnu

As the posts in the referenced thread point out, there is rarely any
practical difference in operation of the kernels; as a practical
matter, if I had thought it would matter at all, I wouldn't have
recommended it.
In terms of the difficulty building kernels, it's actually a lot
easier than has historically been the case, you just need to get the
tool "darwinbuild" that Kevin wrote from the OpenDarwin site.
