Obviously, I type "make" for my occasional kernel compile. My editor of choice changes from time to time.

since xcode provides IOKit and KEXT templates, most people who are developing those(new or old) are more likely to be using xcode.

Building kernels and developing kernel extensions are two totally different tasks.
