Hi,
I did just that, it doesn not seem to go beyond the grey screen.
Just
seems like its hung or something.
If you see a grey screen, you didn't (successfully) press Command-v.
Actually, you still see the grey screen with the Apple logo while the
machine is POST-ing and loading BootX, but before it has loaded the
rest of the kernel and called bsd_init().
If it can't load BootX or the kernel, depending on the firmware, the
screen will stay grey, and will show either a broken folder icon or an
international interdictory symbol, indicating a permissions/ownership/
link-count problem on one of the container directories, or the kernel
or BootX itself.
Once bsd_init() is called, the VM and console code is hooked by BSD,
and it will start printf'ing text to the screen, starting with the
Copyright out of bsd_init() itself.
It sounds like he's not getting far enough to have the kernel loaded:
When it reboots I can see the grey screen. But, instead of the Apple
logo at the centre of the screen I can see some undecipherable image.
What am I missing?
At this point, he can:
(1) Try what we've told him to try
(2) Take a digital picture of what he sees, and post it to a website
somewhere (e.g. <http://www.flickr.com/>) so we can see it too, and
try to help him further
(3) Go to Google or <http://developer.apple.com> and search for other
people with his symptoms, and what they did to fix it.
