That's not always true - I have a couple of PPC macs that show a
grey screen before the kernel loads and blacks the screen out with
the verbose boot. I think OF greys the screen out when it starts the
kernel.

Hi,
I did just that, it doesn not seem to go beyond the grey screen. Just
seems like its hung or something.
If you see a grey screen, you didn't (successfully) press Command-v.
As I have seen it documented and have found it in practice the grey
screen appears whenever OF starts executing the boot loader, not when
it's found the kernel or bootx.

Actually, you still see the grey screen with the Apple logo while
the machine is POST-ing and loading BootX, but before it has loaded
the rest of the kernel and called bsd_init().
Terry, doesn't POST occur between power on and OF???
The Apple logo is found, iirc, in the bootx file. So this is well
after POST yet before the kernel loads.
...and bsd_init() happens well after the kernel has loaded. The pager
is started after this.
At least this is what we've been teaching as OS X Boot Internals ;)
