Intel(r) 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer's Manual Volume
3A: System Programming Guide, Part 1, Chapter 9 - PROCESSOR MANAGEMENT
AND INITIALIZATION, Section 9.8.5 Initializing IA-32e Mode

If you could read this, it details the step a privilege 0 software
needs to take to switch between modes.

I hope someone from Apple CoreOS group should be able to clarify on
how they support running 64-bit applications.
