Also make sure to enable the root user in Netinfo manager.  In my experience you won't see the "Other..." option unless you've done this.  This can be done with the Netinfo Manager application in /Applications/Utilities under the Security menu (you first need to select "Authenticate..." in that menu).

The key point is that you have to switch loginwindow to "Name and password" mode, rather "List of users".
