Could someone please confirm this for me?

DTrace is currently not supported for KEXTs <rdar://problem/5583283>.  This is a much-requested feature and Apple is actively investigating solutions.

What you could try (and perhaps this is what you're thinking of) is inserting kdebug signposts.  Depends on what you're actually trying to do; you mentioned essentially function tracing, which is certainly easy enough with signposts (though you have to add them in manually).

See http://developer.apple.com/documentation/DeveloperTools/Conceptual/SharkUserGuide/SystemTracing/chapter_4_section_5.html for more info.
