How much assurance do you need that a software "search" capability will
prove data has been securely deleted? I say that because using a "search"
capability to demonstrate a disk has been deleted isn't necessarily going to
prove the files have been deleted and are unrecoverable. The DoD standard
(5220.22-M/5200.28-STD) is mandated so more advanced recovery methods like
magnetic force microscopy or others cannot be used to recover the data.
Those are things that software can never do so relying on software to
validate some deletion method actually works can't give you the assurance
you're necessarily looking for.
On a related note there are some cross platform solutions supporting Macs
which implement the DoD standard although I don't know if any are
certified.
