I just finished dealing with a printing issue that effected a number
of Macs in our group that were upgraded to Tiger. The symptom was
that with certain printers (mostly HP Laserjets), the print dialog
box would do nothing when when you tried to press the "Print"
button. Save as PDF and Preview buttons also did not work.
Sometimes printing would work at random single instances.
I tried many different things to solve the problem. Sometimes I
could get printing to work for a while, at least until the next
reboot. I could go on about temporary files, CUPS, "Print Center
Repair", and the like, but I will cut to the chase. I finally found
a solution that seems to work consistently, so I am posting it here
for those of you who have tried everything else.
I don't know if all of these steps are truly necessary. Of course,
this is FYI and has the potential to leave you worse off than you
started, so use at your own risk and take reasonable steps, like
backing things up, before you try anything like this.
The "theory" behind this method is to delete all print preferences
and temp files, and then reinstall
Tiger to obtain a "clean" printing system.
1) Log off of your user account and log back in as root. You
might need to enable the root account from the "Netinfo Manager".
2) Open "Printer Setup Utility", select "Reset Printing System..."
from the "Printer Setup Utility" menu, then quit the "Printer Setup
Utility" application
3) Open "Terminal"
4) In the terminal window, type "rm -R /var/tmp/* <Carriage Return>"
5) Quit the "Terminal" application
6) Do a spotlight search of "com.apple.print", and delete all
files that it finds
7) Insert Tiger Install DVD and run "Install Mac OS X"
8) After restart, you will be directed to the Options button, and
you should select "Archive and Install" and select the option to save
the user settings
9) After Tiger installs, run "Software Update" as many times as
necessary until there are no more updates to install.
10) Use "Printer Setup Utility" to set up the printers.
**The printers should work OK at this point**
After a few days pass with all of your applications running properly,
you can delete the "Previous Systems" folder on your hard disk (if
you want to save some space).
