We've had this problem on a number of our 10.4 installs and it turned Tiger
into a non-starter for us. I was able to solve on using the utility Printer
Setup Repair, but using the same util on another machine did not solve the
problem.
Like you I spent a great deal of time rummaging around in files and
directories, but was never able to solve the problem. I'll try this and see
if it works for us.
