I should have read the book????? :) Just kidding.

Actually, I am talking about the little square metal piece... it actually attaches to the rack (fills in the square holes).

the other servers include a little metal piece that clamps the two "flaps" together (on the little metal square piece) so you can pull it through the square rack hole... if you don't have one, you have to use pliers, a flat head screw driver (which can go through your hand I found out), or other make shift ways...

I was able to mount the rails without problem, it was getting the little silver pieces to hold the rails in (on the front and back of each rail) which was problematic. After the Dell people left I took their piece and everything went in fine after that... but it was a painful lesson :)

Also keep in mind, I can't even put together a model car (I am terrible at reading maps, and can't even put together my Bowflex machine)... but the thing I noticed missing was the little "clamper"...

Maybe it's just a problem I have, but if Apple can, please include that little piece, it made things go a lot smoother.

The mounting template is actually a metal bar that you use to make sure you don't unevenly mount the rails... i might try to take a picture of what i am talking about and show you... the little square pieces (metal), have to go in to the rack holes... and those things can be a real, real, REAL, pain to get in.. especially the XSERVE RAID (got it right this time :) - the raid clamps are heavy duty, and do not bend easily at all...

After cutting my hands to hell, a lot (and I mean A-LOT) of fowl language, and wondering how the same people who developed the beautiful powerbook could come up with the X-SERVE rack mounts... I came up with the following request:

Can Apple PLEASE include the little metal piece that allows a person to mount the "square peg" in the rack?

I don't know what the official name for it is, but it looks like a little metal piece with a hook on the end of it... As I sat in the server room installing *5* XSERVES with 5 XRAIDS by MYSELF, Dell was in the rack next to me with that little piece laughing as I tried to lift and mount these things on my own.

Next time I will pay for a service company to install the machines to the rack - but I didn't trust any of the "currently available contractors" to mess with my XSERVEs. I think i will stick to programming :)

Mike,

For the Xserve:
***** Review page 33-34 of the Xserve User's Guide.
	* Remove the Xserve cover and mount it in the rack first ( 2 lbs. ?)
	* Use the included "Mounting Template"
(flat plate with holes on each end to separate posts on cover.
	* Insert the Xserve back into the cover (already mounted in the rack)

For the Xserve RAID (not XRAID):
***** Review page 33 of the Xserve RAID User's Guide.
* Use the included "Mounting Template"
(flat plate with holes on each end to separate L-brackets to right distance.
* Insert the Xserve RAID into the L-brackets (already mounted in the rack)

Is that what you were looking for ?
