racks without prethreaded holes often come with empty square holes in which you have to emplace a threaded "nut". The nut has ears which hold onto each side of the square hole of the rack.

These things were designed by the worst type of sadist SOB you've ever encountered. =-)

Meant to be sturdy, these nuts are stronger than flesh, so they do not easily compress in order to fit into the square hole.

Meant to be a means to slicing up the flesh from the forearm down, Genghis Khan must have been reincarnated to create this torture device.

However, many server vendors will include a "nut shoehorn" that fits the nut into the hole somewhat easier. Essentially, it's a small piece of metal with a slight curve at the end, that allows one to get some leverage on the nut.

This sounds like a device I saw recently on the History Channel. It was on a show about the interrogation techniques used by the Viet Cong and later adapted by the CIA.

Recently, while installing 9 Xserves and an Xserve RAID into a rack, along with the main user of the system, we found 4 pints of O+ blood to be sufficient given the vigor and frequency with which the various tools in the toolbox made their way, with great ease I might add, through the various parts of the flesh surrounding his phalanges. I was using my SwissTool's pliers, which although somewhat slower, kept my flesh relatively unblemished, save a few minor nicks.

Levity aside, I feel your pain. Honestly, I do. I have battled with these things many times over. Holding the Xserve RAID, fully loaded with drives even (not my brightest idea), with one hand while trying to secure it in the rack, was much less painful than the experience of putting the little square pegs in.
