If Mr. Pike didn't make clear from his follow up description:
racks without prethreaded holes often come with empty square holes in
which you have to emplace a threaded "nut". The nut has ears which
hold onto each side of the square hole of the rack.
Meant to be sturdy, these nuts are stronger than flesh, so they do not
easily compress in order to fit into the square hole.
However, many server vendors will include a "nut shoehorn" that fits
the nut into the hole somewhat easier. Essentially, it's a small piece
of metal with a slight curve at the end, that allows one to get some
leverage on the nut.
Also, that nut shoehorn will often come from the rack vendor, or
whomever supplies the nuts; I wonder that Mr. Pike didn't see it in
the bag nuts that came from APC or from wherever he bought his racks.
Or maybe the Dell guy just go to it first?
