I'll have to agree with Charles. Even at home, with two accounts on one machine, this is really a nightmare - so un-Mac-like that it galls me. The thing I have noticed that is a big pain is that each user (as far as I have been able to tell) has full preference control for all the apps - that is crazy for some of the features. There is only one app on the machine, but when people can set contradictory preferences for that app, it is a mess. Example - a lot of the apps now have an option to "automatically check for updates" - that is a pain on a dial up connection. But, if the admin doesn't want to do that, and he sets it that way, it doesn't preclude another user on the machine to set it. Those kind of settings should only have one global setting. The settings conflict and then the computer gets confused. I have tracked this to being the cause of my computer never going to sleep - it is such a pain.

Yea, I've read them all, the problem is that there is no way to support a
fair number of the preferences at a granular level. OK, here is an example
... Let's say that I have OD deployed and now I want to set the default
screen saver and idle time for all of my users. I can not open WGM and
select a group or even a user and click on "Preferences", choose system
Preferences and select a System Preference and set the default or a custom
setting for that item. Instead I can only select which ones to show or not
to show. IMHO, I think that all of these settings should be manageable from
within WGM. And to make them all available from either a computer or user
account.
So, one could then argue that you can write a login script to do all of
this. Well, that would be great but login scripts are a computer managed
item only. And there is no good way to integrate them in to the directory.
