Opening the mini isn't too bad - I popped mine open in about 30 seconds with a putty knife. Good instruction video here:

According to MacWorld, Apple stated that opening the MacMini does not
void the warranty (if you don't break it). But, at $499, it is pretty
much a disposable computer. Has anyone on this list done the mod to use
a standard desktop hard drive to replace the laptop drive?

No guts, no glory...and at the cost of a MacMini it is disposable.

The price of installation is built into the cost of the module (due to
the fact that only AASP can install it). If someone is quoting you an
installation charge, then go to an AppleStore and have it done.
Opening the MacMini will invalidate your warranty - and is not as easy
as it looks! Installing the Airport/Bluetooth is very tricky, and I
wouldn't recommend it.

Is there anyone selling a Bluetooth and Airport module I can add to the

The MacMini just begs to be opened by the end user. It was a snap to add
more RAM, and I will probably swap the drive for one of the new laptop
drives that runs at 7200 RPM.
I can't help but wonder if Apple is getting kickback from the companies
which manufacture putty knives? :)
