[Fed-Talk] OS X 10.3.9 broke Mail

  • Subject: [Fed-Talk] OS X 10.3.9 broke Mail

We're slowly learning at our site that the OS X 10.3.9 update broke Mail's interaction with our Linux mail server using SSL/TLS and Qpopper. I don't have a OS X Mail from 10.3.8 to test against, could also be the libraries involved in the SSL/TLS connection:

May 11 08:24:14 tlsmailserver in.qpopper[27449]: Qpopper ready for input from mkuser at localhost [127.0.0.1] [popper.c:294]
May 11 08:25:14 tlsmailserver in.qpopper[27449]: mkuser at localhost (127.0.0.1): -ERR POP EOF or I/O Error [popper.c:820]
May 11 08:25:14 tlsmailserver in.qpopper[27449]: Performing maildrop update... [pop_updt.c:292]
...
May 11 08:25:14 tlsmailserver in.qpopper[27449]: +OK Pop server at tlsmailserver.nrl.navy.mil signing off. [popper.c:360]
May 11 08:25:14 tlsmailserver in.qpopper[27449]: I/O error flushing output to client mkuser at localhost [127.0.0.1]: Broken pipe (32) [pop_send.c:689]
May 11 08:25:14 tlsmailserver in.qpopper[27449]: pTLS->m_pPOP->tls_started == false [pop_tls_openssl.c:836]

At first we thought it was the server but turns out the only users affected are those running OS X Mail, the problem is not obvious so we missed it earlier. One user's Mail failed every time starting about April 17, he has finally given up hope of ever using OS X Mail again and is living with Mozilla, which he had been using in parallel with Mail. For the rest of us the failures were hidden by occasional successes and the fact the Mail beeps the same on mail check regardless of zero messages or an error.

I can't get any error logging out of OS X Mail (tried everything in the one article on Mac OS X Hints for Mail 1.3.9 but the last 10.3 version is 1.3.11 and there is no logs being generated on my machine) and the maximum error logging on the server is not very illuminating other than only Mac users using OS X Mail are generating errors. Given 10.4 is out and that I don't have anything besides the above it's hard to report this. I'm betting 10.4's Mail probably has the same problem and given three reported 10.4 issues affect me I'm in no hurry to update (Norton AV, Retrospect, MS Mouse). A partial downgrade is more probable in the near term.

No doubt many people have no trouble with OS X Mail from 10.3.9, but how many people are interacting with a secure mail server using SSL/TLS (SSL in Mail's preferences).

How am I reading my email? "ssh tlsmailserver" and "more /var/mail/mkuser"
scp'ing the mailbox back also works, always tricking deleting the mailbox after scp'ing it.

Michael
