[Fed-Talk] Macs in Secure Areas

Of course I have to ask: how many Macs are in your secure areas *right now*? And how many PCs?

The ultimate question is, does it make financial sense for Apple to make a model sans wireless/camera to appeal to the federal market?

The answer to that question is sensitive information (at least here). I would point out, however, that no where is there more of a sensitivity to the vulnerability of machines than in classified environments. The PC side is lacking an out of the box diskless solution and that is playing strongly in Apple's favor for classified (if we could just get XSAN to work in a diskless environment, but I digress). But what good will that do if there are no mac clients we can purchase without all these forbidden technologies on it?

Current legislation will soon start restricting our unclassified machines to many of the same restrictions that the classified ones have. The insider threat is just as big of a concern (if not bigger) than the outsider threat. How do I convince my bosses that purchasing a Mac that has technology built in that enables the insider to eavesdrop or get information out is better than buying a PC full of security holes?

That argument aside, let me say this simply... Other hardware manufacturers are willing to play ball and get us what we need. If Apple doesn't, I believe it will stop whatever growth it has accomplished in this sector and likely become mostly extinct in it and that means both unclassified and classified environments. Hey Apple, how about chopping this stuff out and lowering the price for us here in government? You'd be loading up our guns with bullets rather than providing ammo for the PC advocates.

Sean
