Fed-Talkers:
Okay, I have no choice but to jump in on this issue of "Boot Camping".
Firstly, I have been a Unix Administrator (and Linux cheerleader!) for
many years. Several intelligent people have asked me, why do you feel that
Linux is a required OS on a Mac, if you have MacOS which is a Unix OS? It
is not a requirement, but still, many people do want Linux on the Mac even
though most of its functionality is offered via MacOS.
I feel that Linux being the only operating system that natively has an
internal support (kernel based) for AX.25 protocol as well as many Amateur
Radio based modulations, it does offer things over MacOS, so running Linux
on a Mac is of interest to certain people, and I do so on my PowerPC based
Mac right now.
Since Linux and it's development model are not only commercial, but a
large fraction of people develop Linux as hobbyists, or unpaid programmers
the compatibility of Linux to boot in an "EFI environment" is forthcoming,
as RedHat itself has publicly committed to that effort as well. However, I
feel this only leaves the issue of if Linux will install using the process
of "Boot Camp", and I am quite sure such compatibility will soon exist.
Now as to the question of Windows running on an Intel based Macintosh,
there is a reasonably decent justification for this. Granted, I am not the
sort of person to purchase a new Intel based Mac just to run Windows, yet,
having Windows is still a requirement for me, as distasteful as I might be
finding that fact. Several software packages written to perform management
tasks as a Navy Reservist are on Windows, and no one has the time or is on
issue as making the time to write those apps for the Mac. Once the Mac has
some sort of "Wine" based mechanism (Darwine?) to allow X86 binary code to
run under MacOS with no recompilation requisite, I will not need Windows.
And I arduously will remark, this would be my optimal choice.
Let us remember, this is not a "religious issue" for everyone, since a
good many reasonable users just need to still run Windows based software
since it has not been redeveloped for the Mac, and it is a requirement.
All of this said, I look forward to the day when I can boot many OSes,
including Solaris, Linux, Novell, or anything else on an Intel Mac that is
capable of being booted on a PC.
Have a wonderful and blessed day.
